Relay Replacement Project (Sarnia)

Description: Elecsar Engineering provided engineering services for relay programming and construction specification (complete with corresponding drawings) to upgrade the 14 kV line protection between Sub 181 and Sub 182 at the TransAlta plant in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

- Upgrades 14 kV line protection equipment, utilizes synchrophasers and fast messaging;

ESSO CoGeneration Project (Sarnia)

Description: Elecsar has provided the high voltage electrical engineering portion relating to the protection and control system of this 100 MVA (80 MW) GE gas turbine which makes both power and steam and supports the existing refinery distribution.
Features:
- Provided protection and control design, operating manuals, commissioning assistance;
- Prepared and presented courses on the operation of the co-generation system;
- Incorporated an "islanding" and "resynch" system (manual and automatic) improving reliability to the refinery process;
- Utilized a "Double Jones" transformer station configuration to accomodate the co-generation;
- Modernization of outdoor oil breakers with SF6 dead-tank breakers to support this project, including upgrade of all associated electro-mechanical relays to solid-state programmable relays;
- Complete upgrade to old electrical hardware within the outdoor station (cap-and-pin insulators to polymer post insulators, cabling upgrade, and mechanical cable connectors to crimp-style connectors)

Small Hydraulic Generating Station (Renfrew, Ontario)

Description: This facility, which was originally constructed in the first decade of this century, was rehabilitated by Elecsar Engineering. Both stations together have five generators rated at 2,000 kW with a terminal voltage of 4,160 V.

- Arc-resistant, compact SF6 indoor 5 kV generator switchgear;
- Replaced existing on-line shaft driven exciters with solid state exciters;
- Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for automatic generator control;
- Microprocessor based monitoring and control for Renfrew HEC System and Generating Stations;
- Optimized PLC programming for controlling power output and peak shaving schemes;
- Full protection and control package for generators and exciters.
- Engineering assistance to replace old wooden barrel stave style penstocks with new steel penstocks.
